Dr. Soham Mujumdar is an assistant professor in Mechanical Engineering Department at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. Before joining IIT Bombay in 2018, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he also obtained his PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2016.
Dr. Mujumdar has over 15 years of research experience in development and modeling of manufacturing processes. During his PhD, Dr. Mujumdar developed a multi-physics model of electrical discharge machining (EDM) process. In this research work, a physics-based approach to model the process of dielectric breakdown, formation and expansion of EDM plasma, and resulting material removal was developed. These modeling tools were further used to explore possible mechanisms for improving productivity and energy-efficiency of the EDM process. As a postdoc, Dr. Mujumdar worked on multiple projects in the area of atomized-spray-based cutting fluid delivery, titanium machining, electrical discharge machining and high-pressure die-casting.
Dr. Mujumdar's current research interest include micro/nanomanufacturing, process modeling, and manufacturing sustainability. Know more about his ongoing research at IIT Bombay.
